To get a good mark in examinations has been regarded as being most important for a student, and it is also what parents always expect their children to do.But is it enough? These days increasing attention has been paid in schools across the country to what is called quality education (素质教育) .It means that a student, apart from doing well in exams, should develop his skills in other ways so as to turn himself into a qualified graduate for modernization of the motherland.

Quality education, said Xing Jizu, Party Secretary of the Education Bureau of downtown Hongkou District Shanghai, aims to help students to gain a high moral standard, a strong sense of patriotism (爱国精神), a strong wish for learning, as well as a sound (健康的) mind and body.

\"We need reforms (改革) to achieve our goal for quality education.\" Mr Xing Jizu told SSP.He also outlined what they had planned.

As for physical education, every students is required to have at least one hour of exercise a day.Every year, a sports meet will take place at each school.Besides, various kinds of after-school activities will be organized to help develop the students' practical and social abilities. \"What we are doing is by no means to weaken the importance of the regular classroom teaching or exam results,\" Xing pointed out.\"Instead, we hope that through quality education, students can learn more, in less time, in an easier way.Only in this way can we bring up children fit for the bright future of China.\"

Living away from your country can be a really interesting and unforgettable experience, but at the same time it has very important effects on your life.

The major effect, and also a very common one, is that once you start a regular life away from home, you miss everything. This fact doesn't mean that you are unhappy but that you are aware of being on your own.Missing your family and the attention they all paid to you is a very unusual thing.Little details like sitting on a Sunday morning watching TV alone instead of helping your dad organizing his things or having a nice chat with your mom makes you realize how valuable your family really is.It's clear that you have started to appreciate everything you had before.

The second main effect is that you may learn how to accept another type of society and culture into your daily life.Since you are living in a place with different customs and traditions from yours, you have to be able to develop yourself in unknown conditions. This means making new friends, learning other points of view, accepting different opinions and values, and seizing every opportunity you have to go to new places. Therefore, you'll be able to achieve true knowledge.Suggesting to change your mind totally would be foolish; the best thing to do would be to stick to your most important values and then change those that you believe could be improved.

The most important effect of living away from home is the independent Behavior(行为) that

grows inside of you.Living on your own far from your family gives you a lot of experiences toward organizing your life.Since it is up to you and no one else to go to school, clean your room, wash your clothes, and organize your expenses, it is certain that you will have a good and strong sense of responsibility.Being independent and responsible will help you get through life. Living far from home, even for a short period of time, can be really hard at the beginning. We have to remember that all changes are difficult but it is necessary for us to go through them to build our character. Most important of all, it helps us appreciate everything we have.

45.According to the text, which of the following statements is NOT true? A.Once living away from home, you should change your mind wholly.

B.Once living away from home, you would think about common things that ever happened

to you.

C.Once living away from home, you have to arrange everything by yourself. D.Living away from home helps you have a sense of responsibility. 46.While living away from home, you can do all of the following EXCEPT ____. A.build up a sense of responsibility C.become more independent

B.experience another type of society D.be proud of yourself

D.is a little worried about living away from home

48.The underlined words \"go through\" in the last paragraph probably means ____. A.examine carefully C.walk through

They cannot vote which nations should have a seat on the United Nations Security Council (安理会), but ordinary people have shown their feelings.

By Tuesday afternoon, over 11.5 million people in and outside China had signed an on line petition (请愿) saying Japan should not succeed in its bid (申请)for an everlasting seat on the

Security Council.

The loud call is due to the historical facts in World War II.Some Japanese politicians said their country is ready to play a more active role in global affairs, and their country's contribution can no longer be limited to financial aspects.

The petition by 11.5 million people tells Japan that money alone cannot buy their hearts. A new history textbook that a right-wing Japanese organization has submitted (递交) for official agreement goes so far as to paint Japan as a \"victim\"(牺牲者)in World War II .Its authors even say that China started all the wars between the two countries.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi turned down an invitation to a grand party in Moscow on May 9 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of War World II.Koizumi's absence will do nothing but encourage more probes (追究) into his country's historical baggage. Japanese politicians continue to visit the Yasukuni Shrine (神社).Wartime leader and war criminal Hideki Tojo, as well as five other hanged war criminals, are buried at the shrine. They talk about peace during the visits and ask their Asian neighbors to understand Japanese culture, which requires them to visit Shinto shrines to mark seasonal celebrations. But they don't see the pains that the Japanese invasion (侵略) brought on other Asian countries. How can a nation sleep with such a history on its conscience (良心)?The amount of money Japan gives the United Nations does not necessarily give the country the role in international affairs.Neither will an everlasting seat on the Security Council free Japan from its historical baggage.

49.According to some Japanese politicians their visits to Shints Shrines are due to . A.the fact that the six World War II criminals were buried there

B.the intention that Japan wants to get an everlasting seat on the Security Council C.the requirement of Japanese culture D.the probes of the war criminals

50.The 11.5 million people signed an online petition to ____.

A.stop Japan from bidding an everlasting seat on the Security Council B.express their feelings that they didn't want Japan to win its bid C.honor the people who died in World War II

D.support idea that Japan should give the UN more money. 51.In a new Japanese history book ____.

It often happens that a number of applicants with almost the same qualifications(资格)and experience all apply for the same position. In their educational background, special skills and work experience, there is little, if anything, to choose between half a dozen candidates (候选人) .How then does the employer make a choice? Usually on the basis of an interview. There are many arguments for and against the interview as a way of selection. The main argument against it is that it results in a wholly subjective decision. As often as not, employers do not choose the best candidate. They choose the candidate who makes a good first impression on them. Some employers, of course, reply to this argument by saying that they have become so experienced in interviewing staff that they are able to make a good assessment of each candidate's likely performance. The main argument in favor of the interview is that an employer is concerned not only with a candidate's ability, but with his or her suitable personality for the particular work situation. Many employers, for example, will overlook occasional mistakes from their secretary if she has a pleasant personality.

It is perhaps true to say, therefore, that the real purpose of an interview is not to assess (评估) the assessable aspects of each candidate but to make a guess at the things that are hard to measure, such as personality, character and social ability.Unfortunately, both for the employers and applicants for jobs, there are many people of great ability who simply do not interview well. There are also, of course, people who interview extremely well,.but are later found to be very unsatisfactory employees.Candidates who interview well tend to be quietly confident, but never boastful (自夸的 ) , direct and straightforward in their questions and answers; cheerful

\"Have you ever been out on a boat and felt it lifted up by a wave? Or have you jumped in the water and felt the rush of energy as waves came over you?\" asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group at the University of Edinburgh.\"There is certainly a lot of energy in waves,\" he said.

Scientists are working to use that energy to make electricity. Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean.\"The wind starts out by making little ripples (涟漪), but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,\" Taylor said. \"Waves are one of nature's ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.\"

When waves come toward the shore, people can set up darns to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine (涡轮机).The turbine can then power an electrical generator to produce electricity.

\"The resource is huge,\" said Janet Swain of the World Watch Institute.\"We will never run out of wave power.\" Besides, wave energy does not create the same

pollution as other energy sources, such as oil or coal.Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth's surface that would make wave power seem ideal for creating energy throughout the world, though there are some weak points yet to overcome.

Swain said that wave power still costs too much money. She also said that its effects on sea animals are still unknown. What is more, wave power could affect fishing and boat traffic. Traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may someday run out.\"Demand for energy to power our TVs and computers, drive our cars, and heat and cool our homes is rising rapidly throughout the world,\" Swain said. In the future when you turn on a light, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!

57.The writer uses the two questions at the beginning of the passage to ____. A.test the readers' knowledge about waves B.draw the readers' attention to the topic C.show Jamie Taylor's importance D.invite the readers to answer them

B.build more small power stations on the oceans C.reduce the cost of turning it into electric power D.quicken the steps of producing electricity

Nowadays, millions of migrant workers flood into cities in search of jobs and better living. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.

Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, sanitation, education, employment and so on.City services and facilities have been strained to a breaking point.Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air mercilessly polluted. What is more, the city is also threatened by rising crime. Not a single day passes without the report of someone being robbed, kidnapped or murdered. Last but not least, city-dwellers are not only separated from the natural world but also isolated from each other, even not knowing the name of their next-door neighbor.

All these problems have harmed the attractiveness of the city.Unless there is some improvement, more and more people may seek to live in the suburbs.
